NIGER: MNCG SUPPORTING HEALTH

Multinational CIMIC Group specialists provided healthcare equipment and supply to support the civil population of Niamey

Niamey, February 06, 2023.
In compliance with one of the 3 CIMIC core functions -especially that related to the support to Non-military Actors and the civil environment, Multinational CIMIC Group specialists have begun a large-scale antimalarial drug supplies distribution from items donated by the Italian  government for the residents of Niger’s capital, Niamey.
Additionally, MNCG operators also supported the Pediatric Hospital “Maternitè Issaka Gazoby” by delivering humanitarian aid (medicines and medical equipment). The head of the Tactical CIMIC Team in Niger, Lieutenant Colonel Leonardo De Santis, speaking during the donation ceremony, stressed the importance of this initiative, which aims to provide free antimalarial drug supplies to populations living in conditions of poverty, in the crisis areas where the Italian Armed Forces work daily to guarantee security and support to the local Institutions.
Investing in health is a long-term solution to so many of the problems MNCG specialists face today in Africa. Malaria remains a major public health issue in Niger and is endemic throughout the country. Malaria accounts for 28 percent of all illnesses and 50 percent of all recorded deaths. Children under five years of age account for about 62 percent of the burden of malaria. MNCG specialists enthusiastically support the National Niger’s malaria program with the prevention of malaria in pregnancy, mass drug distribution for seasonal malaria prevention, and vector control interventions including consistent use of long-lasting insecticide treated nets.
